Fifty, and the one word you chose
Most people who turn fifty ask what they should do next. Travel, change jobs, finally clear out the garage. You asked something else: “What do I want the next part of my life to feel like?” Not do, not have. Feel. That one word says you already know the plans aren’t the point.
The Sun was in Scorpio the day you were born, so you don’t live on the surface of things. You’ve gone all the way down into some of your years, further than the people around you ever saw. Then you came back up, set the table, answered the phone. Nobody asked what it cost, and you didn’t say.
With the Moon in Pisces, you take in the mood of a room the way cloth takes in water. For a long time, the feel of your life may have been set by others: someone’s silence at dinner, a child’s bad day, a mother’s voice on the phone. You adjusted before you knew you were adjusting. So when you try to picture what you want, the picture comes back blurry and full of other people.
Your mind has a sentence ready for that blur: “At my age, I should know what I want by now.” It sounds like a fact. Mostly it’s pressure. Could it be that you’ve always known what you wanted others to feel, and simply never had the room to ask it for yourself?
Try something small. Picture an ordinary morning in the next part of your life. Not a big event. Coffee, a window, the house quiet. If you want, close your eyes, let your hands rest palms down, and let your body be open. Feel your chest and stomach from the inside, with attention. Does something loosen? Does something hold on? You don’t need to name it. If you want to stop, you stop.
Whatever you find there is more honest than any list. The body doesn’t make plans. It answers when it’s asked, and it may not have been asked in a long while.
You don’t have to know the next part yet. You’ve already begun it, by asking a question that’s finally about you.
