The voice you would never use on anyone else
You send an email and see the typo a second after it’s gone. Or a name you knew perfectly well slips away mid-sentence. Before you’ve even set your cup down, it starts: “How could you be so careless? You always do this.” The words are sharp, they come fast, and they come in your own voice.
Now picture your closest friend making the same small slip. You’d laugh with her. You’d say, “Oh, stop, it’s nothing.” You asked why you’d never talk to anyone else this way, and that last part already says a lot. The kindness is in you. It just doesn’t seem allowed to turn around.
The Sun was in Capricorn the day you were born. There’s a part of you that sets a standard and keeps it, quietly, the way a good builder checks every beam. It’s the part people lean on. It also keeps a record of every crooked beam, mostly your own.
With the Moon in Pisces, your feelings run soft and wide. You take in other people’s hurt almost as if it were your own, so gentleness toward them comes without effort. Could it be that the hardness shows up exactly where that softness would turn toward you? To the strict part, being soft with yourself looks a lot like letting yourself off the hook.
Watch the moment just before the voice starts. There’s a small drop, a flush of heat in the face or a pinch in the stomach, the first second of having gotten something wrong. The voice arrives to cover it. Being scolded is somehow easier to sit with than that plain, small sting. If you want, close your eyes, let your hands rest palms down, and let your body be open. Feel that place from the inside, with attention, before any words come. If you want to stop, you stop.
You don’t need to argue with the voice or win against it. In its stern way, it has been trying to keep you safe from mistakes. What it has never done is stay with you inside the sting.
Underneath all that strictness is someone who cares a great deal about getting things right. She has been waiting a long time to hear the tone you use with everyone else.
