The sweater you put back on the rack
It’s a sweater, or a good pair of shoes, or just the nicer coffee. You pick it up, you like it, and something in you tightens before you even reach the register. Sometimes you buy it and carry the guilt home in the same bag. Sometimes you put it back and walk out with empty hands and a heavier chest.
You asked: “Why do I feel guilty every time I spend money on myself?” Every time. Not when you overspend, not when the bills are due. Every time it’s for you. Spend the same money on your family, a friend’s birthday, a new tire for the car, and there’s no guilt at all. So it isn’t about the money. It’s about who it’s for.
The Sun was in Aries the day you were born. You’re quick, you act, you take things head-on, and you’re first in line when someone needs something. Wanting something for yourself is different. There’s nothing to fight and nothing to fix, just a plain wish. Plain wishes may never have had much room in your life.
With the Moon in Gemini, your mind is fast and it talks. The moment you reach for something, the voice starts: “Do you really need that? Someone else could use this money more.” The arguments come quick and reasonable. By the time they’re done, the wanting has gone quiet, and you call that being sensible.
Could it be that the guilt isn’t a judgment about the sweater at all? That somewhere along the way, taking for yourself got mixed up with taking from someone else? Then every small thing you keep feels subtracted from the people you love.
Next time it comes, before the voice gets going, notice where the guilt lands. Maybe a pinch in the stomach, maybe heat in the throat. If you want, close your eyes, let your hands rest palms down, and feel that place from the inside, only with attention. You don’t have to buy or not buy anything. If you want to stop, you stop.
Nothing is wrong with you for wanting something. The guilt is old, and it’s loud. Underneath it is a woman who would simply like to be on her own list.
